I NEED TO GET RID OF MY HUSBAND’S DEBT!!! HELP? Bankruptcy?
My husband and I are very young and we aren’t entirely sure how to do this. My husband has two different kinds of heart disease and that has racked up quite a few large hospital bills. His debt is definitely over $100,000. He is currently unemployed and I work at McDonald’s. I am starting my second job on Tuesday at Wal-Mart. I don’t know how to pay this off because we also have a little boy who needs diapers and food and such. Also, we are moving later next month to a different apartment.
How does bankruptcy in Wisconsin work? Will it help us with medical debt? What are the pros and cons of bankruptcy? I want as much information as I can get for this. Also, what are some other ways to get out of debt besides bankruptcy??
Any help is great. Thanks.
You should make an appointment with a bankruptcy attorney to discuss. Most bankruptcy attorneys offer one free appointment. Take advantage of it.
Your bankruptcy attorney will probably advise you to get Badger Care BEFORE filing bankruptcy (Badger Care is the state’s insurance program for low income adults who can’t afford private health insurance). Once you file bankruptcy you will not be eligible to file again for 8 years, so you want to make sure that you will have some way of paying future bills before filing to discharge your already existing bills.
It is unreasonable for a person working 2 jobs at WalMart and McDonald’s (both of which pay minimum wage) to support a family of 3 and repay $100,000 in medical bills. Don’t waste your precious money looking into “repayment plans.” Get Badger Care and talk to a bankruptcy attorney about discharging your existing debts.
